There was a bright yellow budgerigar perched on the bathroom window sill yesterday morning. There was no way I could catch it. I noticed the local magpies making a big fuss earlier- and wonder now if it was the budgie they were fussing at. Poor thing. It won't last long- out on its own, exposed to the mercies of an English summer.

We had some imposing weather yesterday afternoon- first thunder and lightning- then a heavy downpour.

I kept waking up last night with David Niven on my mind. He seemed terribly sad.

Budgies can be surprisingly tough birds. Poor little thing may just find a way to survive.

I'd like to think so.

Poor budgie, out in the weather.

Budgies are sociable birds- and this one has nobody....

The budgie may do quite well actually. There were swarms of them flying loose in Kensington Gardens last time I was there. Understand they have a resident population.

Put out a cage with food and water in it. He may take up residence and you will have a new friend.

I love those little guys.

However, I have cats, so no birds for me.

:)

All too soon, a cat will befriend him.

There used to be a feral parakeet that lived with a flock of sparrows near my elementary school. It was bright blue; I saw it for a couple of years running. It had clearly been adopted by the sparrows and was not interested in being recaptured. Jack London, eat your heart out.

If your budgie is anything like the famous wild parrots of San Francisco, he will do well in the feral state. I understand that England's west coast marine climate is similar to that of San Francisco, so ... maybe?

How extraordinary.

And rather splendid.

David Niven had a sad life. His first wife died falling down the cellar steps and he grew to loathe his second, whom he feared to divorce in case he would break up the family.

I haven't seen him since yesterday. I imagine he's moved on.

I love birds. I envy them. If there's one power I wish I had it's flight.

What a lovely story.

So I guess there's some hope for my budgie.

Erm, I really don't know- but I've always thought Frisco was a lot warmer than anywhere in Britain.

When I was a little kid I wanted to be David Niven- or, at least, the debonair English gent he played in Round the World in 80 Days.

He was a charmer- and his memoirs are a delight.

It's a shame he was so unhappy.....

Right now, close to summer solstice here in New England, the high temps this week were in the 60's with intermittent rain and lots of clouds. We had a whole summer like this in 1994 with only occasional hot days, and my then San Francisco daughter told me that we were having a San Francisco summer. Yes, they do get a few hot days out there, but not like southern California. Or even like a real summer here in Boston.

Climate is complicated.

Britain is on roughly the same latitude as New York- but the climate is very different- much less extreme- mainly (I believe) because we benefit from the Gulf Stream- which washes our shores with warm water from the tropics.
