Cerne Abbas

Cerne Abbas is famous for its giant. Unfortunately you need a helicopter to photograph him properly. These pictures are of (what's left of) the Abbey.

Sometimes you really want to slap Henry VIII upside the head, don't you?

You do, you really do!

Is the Abby still in use? The windows are in such good shape.

There's a big house- which looks like it could be 16th or 17th century- and the surviving buildings of the abbey- the gatehouse and the guesthouse- are in the farmyard area at the back. It does look as if the rooms above the gate are in use- but there was no-one around to ask.

I hope it is.

I love the moss and ivy and lichen; I know the Cerne Abbas giant probably doesn't predate the seventeenth century, but this looks like a green man's chapel.

It does!

Very nice composition! It looks fascinating, I definitely want to stop there now.

Thanks.

The church is interesting too- and there are some picturesque, late-medieval cottages.
