Granny Allen's Tiger

I've been meaning to post this for weeks.

My Granny Allen trained as a woodcarver- around 100 years ago- and this small plaque is an example of her work. I don't have a tape measure to hand but I'd say it was about 8"X8".  The "royal tiger" is a badge of the Leicestershires- the regiment my grandfather served with during the First World War.

Of all the knick-knacks we've got lying around the house, this is the one I'd least want to lose.

Yes, hang on to it.

Really, REALLY cool.

Coolest thing I own. :)

I like it. It looks suitably angry
Clever Granny Allen!

She was clever- and rather ahead of her time, I think.

I can see why. It's wonderful.

I've had it since I was a boy- she gave it me herself- and I've always loved it.

That is lovely and the family connection makes it even more interesting.

I suppose I need to decide who I'm going to hand it on to. I'd like it to become an heirloom.

That's lovely!

My Grandma's creative legacy is mostly polystyrene and sequin Christmas ornaments :)

And do you still put them up?

Oh my! I can sure see why you would not want to lose that. It's a GEM.

Your family has been chock full of talent I would say!

We like to dabble in the visual arts. My grandmother's brother was a professional painter, my sister is a painter and photographer....

That's a lovely bit of work!

My very favourite possession.

To quote John Cleese: It is, "Very Nice Indeed". Yes, by all means it should become an heirloom. There is so much talent in your family! It is a fine piece of wood and it contains a fine carving of a royal cat...

I've been thinking how there comes a time when one should start handing things on. One can always put bequests in a will, but I think it's better to act while one's still alive.

That's wonderful! Coincidentally, I photographed this iron lion earlier this week:

I think it's a little older than your granny's tiger.

What a magnificent fireplace!
