The Pictures I Keep On The Dressing Table

Alice by the river in Durham

Michael picking cherries in his Grandma's garden in Kentucky

Joe tackling a big ice cream at the Louisville zoo. (Every time he looked away his aunt- just out of frame- leaned over and took a bite. He was mystified.)

The two top pictures are simply beautiful! The colours and the settings; they just work as beautiful pictures.

That said, I prefer the third picture. It reminds me of a picture that was taken while I was trying to tackle an entire chocolate gateau when I was three or so. There's something cute about it, perhaps because it's not a classically "pretty" picture; it seems so much more intimate, somehow.

The first two are posed pictures, the third isn't. Sometimes you just get lucky!

The first two are wonderful, almost like someone could have painted.
The bottom one though is extremely cute!

Thanks.

Your Alice reminds me of my Alice at that age. My Alice is 22 now and has an LJ, [livejournal.com profile] sommeilbienivre.

You Alice is already on my FL. :)

My Alice is 30.

Can I ask why you chose the name? In my case it's because I'm a Lewis Carroll fan.

[identity profile] huskyteer.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 31 and also an Alice. I think Lewis Carroll had something to do with it in my case too.

It's quite simply my favourite name.

There's a lovely poem by William Morris that begins

Lady Alice, Lady Louise,
Between the wash of the tumbling seas,
We are ready to sing, if so ye please;
So lay your long hands to the keys;
Sing, "Laudate pueri"....

It's called The Blue Closet

I had nothing to do with it--she's my stepdaughter. :) But she was named after her father's mother, a formidable woman, and there are many Alices in that family line, going back to Norman France. Her middle names are after her mother's grandmother's.

Ah yes....

That's another reason for loving the name- that it's Norman French!

They remind me of Carroll's photographs come to think of it

So unlike the girl in the Tenniel illustrations.

And slightly disturbing to a 21st century sensibility.

Those are lovely! Is that Kentucky bluegrass or just the effect of passing years on the photo?

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

I'm afraid it's simply because the colour has faded.

Love all those pics. Dunno who dressed me though in that pretty dress, red socks and dodgy trainers!!!! xxxx

Glad you like them. I guess your ma was responsible for the outfit.

Do you remember that day? It was an outing the church laid on. You and I wandered off by ourselves and you were afraid the coach would leave Durham without us.

Durham

[identity profile] alice-g.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I totally remember it, and going to Evita with you. Well I say I totally remember it. I remember that we went and that we were on a coach. I have a vague memory of worrying the coach would go without us - but you have told me that so many times it may be that I just share your memories. I remember sitting by that river. Also did we have an ice cream? Above all I remember that had a really good day and really enjoyed myself. Also I remember I felt a bit grown up and special going in a church trip just me and my Daddy! Aw.....

That pic of me is pretty intense I clicked on it and brought up a bigger version, I scared myself with it. Not in a bad way, but I just look so knowing...like a semi-evil, semi -benevolent empress child!

The Shamen want to charge me £250 to keep their song lyrics in my book - no way man - I'm removing them. That will cost me ££££ too but only $1 a word . They only charge cos it's at design stage... why didn't i think of this before ... where was the all knowing Empress then eh!!!!!

I like Durham and the North East. We were up there earlier this year. We got to see the Angel of the North- which is amazing.

"Semi-evil, semi-benevolent empress child". I like it! Maybe you should put this picture on your website.

The Shamen should be glad of the publicity. Doesn't that sort of quotation come under the definition of "fair-usage"- which means copyright doesn't apply?

Alice is so pretty.

The ice cream is as big as Joe's head! How funny!

Alice did a bit of modelling once, but they wanted her to lose lots and lots of weight and she wasn't prepared to jeopardise her health.
