This year, a man from Co. Offaly took over from Bertie Ahern as Taoiseach (i.e. Irish Prime Minister). His heartland base were overheard shouting on his appointment night, as they drank to his success while watching Obama's simultaneous selection as Democrat candidate on the bar TV screens, 'Offaly for the double!'...
just to note that I don't really go back to my Trinity days much and wouldn't be adding people left right and centre from there necessarily. (In case there are a lot of them on your FL) but I'm delighted to add you. I hope you realise what I'm saying in my typical roundabout Irish fashion :-)
My mind is still blown. I voted for him, but watching the numbers pile up was...I can't express. I figured he might win, but taking the majority of the electoral votes was not in my picture. I actually had tears in my eyes several times last night and I've never been like that over politics, never.
I'm hoping beyond hope that this does mean change in a real way for my country, and everybody we (wittingly or unwittingly) influence.

It's infuriating we have to trudge through another 70 days of Bush before the new regime takes over.

Seriously. For the health of the nation, they should have decommissioned him immediately. I'm sure seventy days is enough time to start a few wars.
And thank you; now that song is stuck in my head . . .

I'm still pinching myself. We actually did it...we elected a black man president. I never expected to see it in my lifetime.

Whatever happens next- whether Obama is a great, middling or useless president- this moment will remain as a towering historical landmark.
