The Ydalir Viking Group at Oldham Carnival, June 28
( I was wandering round pretending to be Cartier Bresson and the guy in the second picture very obligingly attacked me- and when I failed to capture it first time round very obligingly attacked me again. )

-And quite litterally; every year in August there's a 4-day Viking fair in a seaside field South of Aarhus, where Viking re-enacters from around the world would gather and set up camp. I always loved it when you could see the few longboats arriving; such elegant vessels! (Most arrived by car, though, but had the common sense to park far away from the camp...)
And I suppose I was actually taught a fair few of the crafts as a kid; our parents showed us how to make simple leather work, wihttle, spin yarn with a stone and short stick, bake flatbread on a stone in a fire, make a simple bow and arrow etc...

These guys seem remarkably serious about what they do- but I don't suppose they have longboats.

They are great fun, although this year I expect to be working - roasting a whole lamb on a spit.

Will you be dressing up in period costume to roast your lamb?

Such courtesy is all too rare these days.
