I rang Alice. The conversation went something like this.

"Hi Dad."

"How did you know it was me?"

"Your name came up. Also a picture."

"You've got a picture of me on your phone?"

"It's one of Granny's. You're about two years old and riding some sort of bike. It's awfully cute."

"Anyway, I've read the contract. it looks good. I think you should sign...."

Alice is writing a book. It's a book that'll fill a gap in the market ( I don't think I should say anything more because it's a very stealable concept) and she's just gone and hooked herself a publisher at the first try. Brilliant.

We didn't talk long because her partner had taken a bottle of champagne out of the fridge and was about to uncork it.

That's fantastic! I trust you'll let us know what it's about once it's published.

Congratulations to Alice!

I'm just about getting used to the new phone technology so it no longer surprises me when the offspring answer their phones with, "Hello, Mum!"

So, your daughter got the writing gene! Wonderful! When the book is published will you share title and author with us on the other side of the Great Pond?
