Eating Meat

I've changed the way I eat. I used to be a vegetarian (who would occasionally indulge in sushi or fish and chips). Now I'm regularly cooking joints.

The night before last I was eating lambs liver on a bed of rice. Last night it was roast brisket of beef. The other day, in a restaurant, I had a steak sandwich with a mustard crust.  It was the must delicious thing ever.

I made the change for reasons of health. I don't have much energy at the best of times. Never did.  But subsisting on a diet of bread and potatoes wasn't helping.

I believe I'm putting on weight. I'm certainly changing my- ahem- contours.

I try to keep things ethical. When I buy meat I want the assurance that the animal had a good quality of life. But I realise the labels I rely on may be bending the truth.

For the first time in ages I'm actually enjoying my meals.  I'm enjoying cooking them too.

I think I already wrote a comment to that extent when you wrote about eating meat again some time ago. I feel very similar, I abbandoned vegetarianism when I discovered about my gluten allergy, and not being able to eat bread, pizza, normal noodles AND meat.. well, I could as well shoot myself in the foot, or something.
And now I truly have to watch myself sometimes, not to get too greedy about the stuff. Particularly now, that I am living again with somebody, who is young and loves to eat, I find myself experimenting, chosing the meat with care, doing the most interesting things with it. Or also, dragging out the traditional receipes. My mom's typical hungarian Goulash, for example. Mmmmh. Or hearty casseroles. AAAAH. Obviously, that too is a reason why my weight skyrocketed over the last months.....!

As a vegetarian I used to find meal times a chore. Lets face it: vegetarian food is mostly not very interesting. There's cheese and- well- that's about it if you're hoping for a bit of flavour.

Despite the fact that I too have reverted to meat eating for health reasons, I must take issue with the "not very interesting" part. :) There are some delicious vegetarian recipes in my Indian Cookery book. I just never had time to make spicy lentils and such things though, what with working full time.

I used to eat a lot of curry. In the end I'm afraid I got sick of it.

I've found the best way to guarantee the meat you buy is healthful (as well as eggs and dairy) is to buy from a farmer's market, if possible. If not, Co-Ops and natural food markets should be fairly honest.

Food truly is amazing! :)

I should explore whether there's a farmer's market round here. I don't know of one, but, then, I haven't been looking.
