Miscellaneous Round-up
1. Ailz passed her OU course on the Enlightenment and Romanticism with a Grade 2. Brilliant! Next year she's studying Shakespeare.
2. That long, long thread on the LJ Potterporn disaster has changed my mind about fandom. I used to be unsympathetic, now I'm not. LJ is a community; twitch one corner of the web and we all feel it. Six Apart didn't seem to understand that. Maybe they do now.
3. Ozu's Floating Weeds (1959) is a remake of a story he first filmed in the 30s. That's probably why it has so much more incident- verging on melodrama- than is usually the case. People duking it out in an Ozu movie- good grief! The actors come to town, perform their crummy little play to dwindling audiences, cause a certain amount of disruption, move on. I'm thinking he revisted the story because he liked actors so much.
4. The latest outbreak of Foot and Mouth seems to have been caused by spores escaping from the commercial research facility which has since been commissioned to produce a vaccine. Isn't that wonderful?

2. Similar to comment for 1.
3. No comment
4. DEFRA has been renamed, not by me, to be The Department for the Elimination of Farming and Rural Affairs. Sounds about right, although I missed, except from a distance, the shenanigans of 2001.

2. Thanks
3. You should try him.
4. What do I know about farming and the countryside? Just about as much as New Labour did. I think they really cocked things up through not knowing when and when to be understanding and when and where to get tough.

4. Rosa Klebb has a lot to answer for and the scientists and vets, both then and now. Private Eye issued an excellent supplement on the last outbreak, well worth a glance if you ever come across it.
By the way, you've probably figured out I'm not really Stalin as my real name listed at LJ suggests. It's a tribute to my Lithuanian Grandfather, at least a tribute of sorts. Allow me to introduce myself, I'm Gavin O'Driscoll. Good night though, it's that time here.

Tell her congratulations!

Isn't that the premise for every B-movie?
