This is the main courtyard at Versailles. Notice the sky. It's going to rain any time soon. What a lot of people! And- would you believe it?- this showcase of French culture has only one eatery on site and all it serves is American fizzy pop, cold pizza and pre-packed sandwiches.

I love the light in this photo and also the way the people are walking in totally random directions.

I shot a lot of pictures at Versailles but this is my absolute favourite.

The only place to get food in Beijing's Forbidden City was a Starbucks, tucked away in a little building near the biggest palaces. I was there in winter and there weren't many people. I sat in almost solitude in a big courtyard, with the palace buildings all around me, drinking a Starbucks cappucino and eating a Starbucks sandwich.

I've really enjoyed the photos and posts from your holiday!

We ate really well in France- nothing spectacular , just honest, unpretentious French cuisine. It's as though the French just don't know how to cook badly.

And then there's Versailles....

Srarbucks would have been a distinct improvement on this joint. I would have welcomed a Starbucks.

It's not just the Americans. The whole world comes to Versailles.

If we'd had the time and it hadn't been raining we'd have gone down into the town and found a bistro and had a proper meal.

The Peruvian tourists would not want that stuff, dear sir!

I'm glad you enjoyed good food elsewhere, though!

I wonder if the Americans wanted it either.

I was thinking Versailles would surely have a decent restaurant on site- comparable to those at Tate Modern or Tate Britain or even the modest but not totally rubbish little restaurant we went to at Hever Castle a few weeks back. But, no: the suckage at Versailles is total.

The food was great. We didn't eat anywhere remarkable- just random bistros and our own not very wonderful hotel- but the standard was so much higher than you'd get in comparable establishments in Britain.

I know what you mean. I feel that way about Peruvian food as opposed to American stuff. ;) Not much of a fan of British stuff, either, but I haven't had enough to really say. Love, love, love having tea, though.

The Americans probably ate it and thought, "oh, god! French food is gross!" [Rolls eyes] I am glad to have been informed. I shall pack a lunch when I go, assuming they haven't done something about it by then!

British food has improved a lot since I was a kid- but mainly because we've imported so many ideas from abroad.

The alternative would be to walk into town- it's only five minutes down the road- and eat in one of the no doubt very good little restaurants there.

Same with Peruvian food, I'll admit. But we had a good base without the fusion. It's only an added blessing! I can't wait to hit Europe again.
