Clocks

Clocks accumulate.

There are three in this room- two of which actually work- and that's not counting the digital display on the set-top box.

There's one in the hall, one in the front room, one in the kitchen, two in our bedroom, three in the spare room, one in the bathroom and I'm not answerable for Joe's stash.

I've just been round the house, counting.

Some we bought, some were gifts, some were given away free with orders over £50.

The only one that's the least bit valuable is the only one that doesn't work.

I like clocks.

They've got faces, they make a noise. It's almost like they're people.

Leaving this every day world

I think we've got one clock in our house, and it's a digital one on the front of the cooker.

Actually, I tell a lie. We have two - another one is the small alarm clock next to my bed.

And that's all? How strange.

I don't feel a room is properly furnished until it has a clock in it.

My mother despairs as she is used to clocks everywhere. I've just never found the need. Often times I don't even bother with a watch...

I don't really need them either. I just find them good to have around- like pets, I suppose.

But they are much easier to deal with than people are!

That has to be part of their attraction.

much like you, I have clocks all over my house. I have three in my living room (and one that doesn't work - the valuable one), three in the bedroom, two in the 'office' and two in my kitchen. Plus I wear a wristwatch. And at work, I have a clock on my desk and one on the wall PLUS there is the computer.

And yet, time is so relative. If it's 5:00 in your living room and 5:10 in your kitchen...what time is it really? Does it depend on what room you're in?

That's a good question. Our various clocks are rarely co-ordinated. They combine to give us an impression of the correct time.

I have one wall clock that is always 5 minutes fast no matter how often I set it back. So we leave it and that´s our "safety" clock so we aren´t late going anywhere. Our valuable clock doesn´t work either. I had to go around and count the clocks we have after reading this...we have 10 and only half are actully working. Some just need new batteries, though.

A clock that's set five minutes ahead is a good idea. Ours all hover around the correct time and- because there are so many of them- I can never remember which are fast and which are slow and regularly miss the opening minutes of my favourite TV shows.

I like clocks too. I find the ticking reassuring.

They're friendly things, aren't they?
