Holidays Are Over

Mike has gone back down south. We put him on the train at lunchtime. I have deflated his blow-up mattress and stowed it away in a drawer.

 The holiday season is over.

Christmas acts as a buffer between one year and the next. Nothing that happens between December 20 and January 3 (approx) ever seems quite real.

I was going to compare Christmas to a fugue state, but having checked out what Wikipedia says about fugue, I suppose that's a bit extreme.

"Confusion over personal identity"? Actually that fits pretty well.

Because what I feel right now is that I've finally got my life back after a blurred hiatus.

Whether I'm happy about it is another matter.

When I look at my living romm, denuded of all Christmas frippery, my relief at its return to normalcy wars with my sense of loss. The holidays often seem to provide just about the ideal atmosphere for relinquishing the day to day responsibilities of reality.

That´s a perfect a way to put it. I do enjoy it while it lasts but in the end there is a tug of war. I want to stay in a state of unnatural non-activity but at the same time I want boring routine back.

Anthropologists would describe it as being a liminal state.

"liminal"? Yes, I like it.

I find January a very blank, bleak month.

Today I walked to pay my water bill and found a blank, bleak building that fit the month perfectly--a substation of the phone company, I guess, but it was just a brick building without windows and with dead grass all around, yellow mud stains on the concrete foundation, scraggly bushes by the door.

Just so. January.

This January is turning out very bleak indeed. Lots and lots of rain.

But I'm a January baby so I reserve my animus for February.
