Zizou!

I've never seen that before- where you charge someone like a bull and head butt them in the chest.

Cool move. How soon before they're doing it in the movies?

The Italian went down like someone busted a cap in his ass.  It's gonna be the defining image of the World Cup.

So, OK,  I wasn't sure at  first, but when I heard that the guy had abused Zidane's sick old mother I realised it was the only human and proper thing to do. Eat dirt, racist scum!

Who cares about the freaking football? This was about honour!

Zidane got the Golden Football (or some such) for being the outstanding player of the tournament.

He-he-heh

Sure was!

I missed it, but have seen the clip from various places on the interweb and am still astonished by how quickly the Italian chap went down.

Saying that, footballers are rather good at diving at the slightest provocation.

I don't think this was a dive. I think Zizou really took the wind out of his sails.

well about what exactly Materazzi said there are conflicting versions.. it goes from "terrorist" to niceties about zizou's mother, sister and other family members. Both concerned parties have declined to speak about it until now, and none of the one million TV cameras was apparently pointed on Materazzi's face well enough to read his lips. Maybe the offence will remain a secret forever. Ah the mysteries of soccer!

Watching the footage, I think Materazzi got to say a whole string of things.

I reckon he should have been red-carded too

I think it was a number of things. According to the Daily Mail (which employed a lip-reader) he first called Zizou a "nigger", then remarked that "we all know you're the son of a terrorist whore" and, finally told him to "fuck off".

He may have lost them the match by getting sent off.

But I reckon he won them the moral high ground.

And Germany's Lukas Podolski pipped Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Best Young Player. The very same Lukas Podolski who dived at every opportunity and applauded the referee's decision to send off an opponent.

This younger generation.. ironically, no sense of honour at all.

The awards have been a joke, as have England and - bar a handful of matches - so has the rest of the World Cup.

Bring on 2010!

You think 2010 will be any better?

I doubt it. Competition at this level- with all the pressure not to fail- seems to bring out the worst in human nature.
