Up In The Air

Last night's dream had me learning to climb a sheer wall. I was told that the greatest rock climber in the world had found it a challenge. An aristocratic gent was tutoring his grandson and I latched onto them with the old gent's encouragement. I didn't get very high....

Rock climbing is not a sport I'd want to try IRL- though it attracts me in the abstract. As a teen I developed an interest in Victorian alpinists- in particular Edward Whymper, the first man up the Matterhorn.

I like heights. I don't like heights. I love a wide view but fear a fall. I went up to the top of the central tower of Durham cathedral once and had to sit on the floor and hang onto the battlements as I peeked over because standing up made me feel giddy and imperilled. I often wonder how I'd comport myself in a hot air balloon....

I don't get scared in planes because the the space is enclosed and the experience oddly unreal but I might not do so well in an open cockpit....

I'm the other way round- I like the rocks but hate being in planes.
