When you stow something away in the attic there's a pretty good chance it's never coming down again. Leastways not in your lifetime.

There's a Tutankhamen quality about attics.

When we were down at my mother's she was clearing her attic out and we brought certain things away with us: a 1950s coffee table with an illustrated map of London behind its glass top, a nice wrought-iron fire screen.

I have a book by Father Martin D'Arcy I found in the attic of my old house in Cambridge. It's a ratty old wartime paperbook, totally without value. But I won't get rid of it . It has talismanic value. It's treasure trove.

Since last week we've had an attic of our own. The guy came and laid  flooring in the roof space and put in a trap door and ladder. It's the warmest room in the house.

Our attic is gradually filling up: two lamp standards, a couple of chests of drawers, lots of boxes full of all sorts.

I wonder who will get to bring them down.

Do I take it the move is on hold for a while, then, or is the attic a cunning of way of increasing the sale value of your house and de-cluttering all in one?

The move is not only on hold, it's kiboshed. We've decided to do this place up instead.

Sounds like a sensible decision. Your love for your region is very clear from your posts and pictures, and I'm sure you'll get much better value for your money by doing up your present house than buying Dahn Sarf.

Plus it means I will get to visit you some time when I move north myself, which is great news!

I'm not native to these parts and sometimes it feels strange, but the reverse of this is that there's still so much to discover.

I have fond memories of attics - when I was a teenager my parents let me move into the attic (always with the proviso that it would be finished off, which it never has been.) yes, VERY hot in the summer no matter what. Before the wallboard was put up, full of interesting shadows and noises. My folks' house was built in 1900, so it was 55+ when I moved up there.

Now, my brother sleeps in the attic. And I have access to the one here - where I stow all kinds of things I don't need. Or want.

Our attic has an atmosphere. And there's some very nifty brickwork. I've put a stool up there so, if I want to, I can go up there and sit and think.

Yes, my folks' does too. The people from whose estate my parents bought the house back in 1953 were lifelong residents of this area and left some interesting journals and recipe books in places all over the house. Mom still has them. The attic had one light bulb then. And the wife of the couple was taken away and committed - she went insane while she was living there, and tried to poison her husband.

The only attic I've got stuff stored in at the moment is Doctor Ex's in Sarf London... Which reminds me I need to travel light when going to London (as always), since there are a few items that I'm missing these days. (Notably my lovely, woven wooly blanket that's equally perfect for cold winter evenings and balmy summer picnics!)
