Rain...

The Japanese like their rain. They find it visually interesting. Their art is full of it-  stylised in their woodblock prints, turned up to the max in their movies...

By contrast, western artists have mainly left it alone. I can't think of a western painter who really had a go at it before Turner.

And how many western filmmakers have made a thing of it the way Kurosawa does?

The rain thundering down on the Rashomon Gate or turning the streets to slop in the climactic battle of Seven Samurai!

We get a lot of it here in the British Isles,  but mostly we wait for it to pass before setting up our easels or whipping out our cameras.

It's as though we haven't learned to see it yet....
