A Quiet Life

We started sellng books through Amazon about a month ago. It's a way of decluttering and it brings in pocket money.

The last book we shifted was a big, fat biography of Walter de la Mare. He's a favourite author of mine. Sweet, little, odd, little, magical, little poems. Terrific, Jamesian ghost stories.

His biography goes like this. Was born, made friends with Sir Henry Newbolt (almost forgotten late-Victorian poet), got married, had kids, thought about having an affair with a female friend but decided against it, got old, died. It must be the least eventful literary life on record.

Did you ever read the novel he wrote about the woman midget? I found it in a bookstore recently and rejected it as too weird, but now I want it again, and I'm sorry I didn't get it...

I've never got beyond the first few pages. De la Mare's prose is very ornate; I can take it in small portions but reading a whole novel is a bit like trying to eat an entire wedding cake.
