Union Jacks made of pastel coloured tea towels hang limply from bendy poles on top of an extendable crowd barrier, which is mounted in its turn on piles of important looking files- only the grey matter they contain isn't paper but concrete; other barriers in grey metal have had extra legs welded on and buck and leap like Spring lambs; a display case has lost one of its metal legs and had it replaced with the sort of stick you'd pick up in a wood and throw for your dog; a floral doorplate- suitable for use in a bathroom- has been affixed to a grim looking exit door.

The other three contenders for this year's Turner Prize take the world at its own valuation- ithat is to say seriously- and only Darling makes me smile. That's why I'm happy that he won.
