It reminded me of the saying that a particular person is "hated or loved, but nothing in between" (examples: generals MacArthur, Patton, Montgomery, etc). With Kissinger, the most people seem to be saying of him was "respected" - I don't know if anyone has come out and talked about his good qualities as a person, which is kind of telling. "Hated or respected" doesn't have quite the same sentimental ring as an obit...
I've never read anything to suggest Dr K was in any way likeable. Even those who feel duty bound to praise him can find nothing to say about his personal qualities.
The adjectives I'd apply to the face he wore in public are "smug'. "bland", "sinister".
