The American Dream
Nov. 24th, 2023 09:23 am Ailz made Hoover Stew for lunch at the Meeting House yesterday. Cheap, nourishing food- beans, macaroni, tomatoes, corn, hot dog sausages- as served in the soup kitchens of the Great Depression. People like it and come back for more. Her personal touch is to add chili powder.
One of her discoveries (she's someone who reads labels)- is that American chili powder contains no actual chili. Weird!
Talking bout American weirdness- and yesterday being Thanksgiving and all, here's The Peacable Kingdom by nineteenth century American Quaker artist Edward Hicks.

Hicks was an itinerant preacher and painter who produced over sixty versions of this subject- none of them identical. In the foreground he illustrates Isaiah 11. 6- 9*. In the background William Penn is making the treaty (which he kept, though his successors didn't) with the indigenous people of what was to become Pennsylvania. Here in its highest iteration, uncorrupted by commercialism, is the American Dream.
*The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the suckling child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice's den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.
