Before There Was TV
I have three card games that belonged to my grandmother- and must therefore be at least 100 years old. There's the classic Happy Families game with the grotesque mid-Victorian characters which may have been a very early work of John Tenniel's but probably ain't, an Alice in Wonderland game with illustrations that are certainly the work of Tenniel (with Dodgson leaning over his shoulder) and a Peter Pan game with characters based (I think) on the original cast of Barrie's stage play. (Even back then people were exploiting original media with tie-ins) Victoria searched online and found the rules of the Alice game and the four of us played three rounds. It was fun. I won the first round by an embarrassingly wide margin and got trounced in the other two. This is what people did before there was television.
