Juvenescence

 What are those? Butterflies?

No, it's a little cloud of petals that have been blown off next door's apple tree. They flit about like they're alive- which in one sense they are and in another sense they're not. As we walked down to the bus stop yesterday morning the pavements were liberally sprinkled with blossom that the hawthorns don't need any more.

The juvenescence of the year (Eliot's phrase) passes so quickly.

A bit like human adolescence.

Yesterday evening, as our bus rested by its boarding point on Terminus road, we watched the milling about of several groups of young people. A tall lad stepped between two girls who were working themselves up to a fight. "He's brave," said Ailz. As an ex pub landlady she has reason to know that women don't fight by Queensbury or any other rules and the person who tries to stop them can get themselves scratched and scalped.

The kids were just kids. Lower teens I think, but dressed up to look older (something the girls manage better than the boys). Oh, the silliness, the gawkiness, the chaos, the joy de vivre!

Our hawthorn is now in full blossom.

I got two goes at adolescence of course and much preferred the second trip!
