poliphilo Ailz bought me a surprise present- a fine upstanding box containing a slip of hawthorn and Californian lilac bush with blue flowers of the kind we've been admiring in other people's gardens.
I started digging holes.
The first hole I dug was full of broken glass, broken crockery and a hinged metal object I finally worked out was a pair of scissors with the blades broken off or rusted away. I dug a little deeper and hit a cable. I don't know what the cable was for but it looked functional and I wasn't going to mess with it- so I filled the hole back in and dug another one a little to the left of it.
The second hole was fine and I planted the lilac.
The third hole contained an ants' nest. I don't like disturbing critters so I filled the hole back in and dug a fourth.
The fourth hole was fine and I planted the hawthorn...
