Caught a bus into town, visited some charity shops, filled my backpack with thrillers and whodunnits, caught the bus home. I wasn't timing myself but I don't think I was away for much more than an hour. It's a small thing, but I couldn't have done it when we were living on the farm...

A month back I was reading Buchan. Now I want to be reading contemporary stuff. I've got Lucy Foley's The Hunting Party on the go. Clever, Christieish stuff (a bunch of not terribly likeable people cut off by snow at a hunting lodge in the Scottish Highlands)- and very good on female friendship- though friendship may not be quite the right word for these snippy, emulous relationships that seem to have ended in murder. She keeps her distance from the men in the story because she isn't entirely sure how we function. A wise decision. A writer should honour their own limitations. The only male whose head she attempts to get into is a bit too Heathcliff to be entirely convincing- a literary type or trope and not quite a person. There is no detective- at least not yet- and I'm three quarters of the way through and haven't the faintest idea how the puzzle is going to work out...
