It snowed a couple of days back- all over the UK- only not here in Eastbourne. It's like we have a micro-climate. The snow didn't hang around for long- and all we saw of it was a couple of small heaps on Frant Common that had probably started out as snowmen.

We were driving up to Greenwich to visit our grandson and his parents. He's two months old now- and when he's awake he eats, takes notice of things that are presented to him and tries to get his arms to obey him- but he's never awake for very long. He's paying the world short visits, dipping into physical reality, doing an exercise or two, then hurrying back to the safety of sleep. Getting used to this very peculiar dimension of ours is a long, long process. I was going to say it takes the whole of a person's childhood but it might be more accurate to say it takes a lifetime...

T.S. Eliot put it succinctly, "Humankind cannot bear very much reality."

We lost track of time and it was getting dark when started out for home. Also it was raining, so the dazzle wasn't only coming from the headlights of approaching cars but also from the wet road under them. We sailed through a set of traffic lights and Ailz (who is the driver; I never learned) said, "Actually I'd have been glad of the pause." When we got home we said to one another, "We're getting too old for this. Our eyesight isn't what it was. No more night driving if we can possibly help it."
