The last solicitor with whom I had personal dealings looked like Mr Pickwick and had 19th century prints on his wall- and I was expecting someone similarly Dickensian to have been put in charge of winding up my mother's estate. Not at all, our man is very young, wears a beard and uses hairspray. When I say "very young" I have to admit that from the perspective I now occupy anybody under 45 looks "very young".

His time is costing us nearly £400 an hour but he gives every impression of being worth it. My sister and I are two of the executors, but this guy- who is the third- will do most of the work. He may not be Dickensian but the laws relating to inheritance are- and if my bro-in-law hadn't worked Bleak House into the conversation I would have tried to do so myself.

The solicitors offices are in Tonbridge. We used to live nearby but never found a local restaurant we really liked- so we drove up the road and ate at Wagamama's in Sevenoaks. When we got home again- mid-afternoon- I took a paracetamol and spent an hour in bed.

There's still a solicitors' office in Rochester (so apt when you think about if) with the fine Dickensian name of Arnold, Tuff & Grimwade.
