Another long drive yesterday- nearly five hours of it there and back. The journey up was lengthened by ten to fifteen minutes by flooding on the back road the sat-nav had chosen for us. On the way home we made a point of sticking as much as we could to motorways and A roads.

When we chose the Care Home in Godalming for my mother we were under the impression it was midway between here and my sister's. It isn't. It's very much closer to her- and she has been doing most of the visiting. This week, however she is away from home.

I dreamed I had climbed to the mezzanine level in a huge theatre- even though I suspected it was out of bounds. A VIP was being shown round and I was afraid I'd be scolded for trespassing so I became an assertive and self confident character from the TV adaption of a classic novel. When the great man's escort asked me who I was (with the implication- "What the hell are you doing here?") I said, "I am Voronov, a wealthy Russian entrepreneur and that"- pointing to an animal that looked like a cat but was supposed to be a monkey-"Is my pet."

I am very suspicious of sat-nav's "short cuts". They're great for journeys cross country on the lesser A-roads when all the major routes run N-S, but I have several times had to ignore the instruction to turn off down a little lane heading over the mountain to cut off a corner. The route may have been shorter in distance, but not in time spent negotiating rural hazards.
