Uncoupling

poliphiloThe Care Home rang my sister yesterday to say they thought our mother was fading away. As it happened she and I and Ailz and Ian were in a pub down the road having lunch, with a view to visiting my mother afterwards.
We spent the afternoon with her. I've no idea if she knew we were there. We talked to her, I read some familiar bits of the Bible out loud, but my suspicion is she was far away- as, indeed, she has been for years. I thought of staying the night, making a vigil of it, but her body is strong and the final uncoupling could take a long, long time. She's still hanging on as I write.
Meanwhile for those of us still firmly attached to our bodies terrestrial life goes on...
