Sandra stayed a couple of nights. She knows Eastbourne but not the surrounding towns- so yesterday we took her to Bexhill and Pevensey. This morning she wanted to watch the sunrise- so we got ourselves down on the beach at around 7.30 but there was a long low cloud on the horizon and all we saw was the world get brighter. After breakfast we drove to the Birling Gap and this time the sun came out from behind the clouds at just the right time. I found a hagstone (that's a stone with a hole through it) and gave it to Sandra as a keepsake. Hagstones are magic. I have no idea how they're formed unless it's by a little stone getting trapped in the hollow of a bigger stone and being swirled round and round by innumerable tides and grinding away and grinding away until it finally comes out the other side.
