Nearly killed the cat.

I was standing at an upstairs window cleaning the gutter and the hook came off my poker and hooked itself onto the gutter and I knocked it down with the pole and it dropped down towards the patio where the cat was waiting by the back door. The bad thing is I knew he was there and did it anyway because I was in the zone and not thinking about anything but the task in hand- which isn't much of an excuse.

Now I feel guilty and serve me right. Maybe next time I won't be so thoughtless.

Fifteen minutes later Ailz was turning a mattress and the cat inserted himself between mattress and bed frame and I had to scoop him out.

So there we are, Marlowe- nearly killed you once and then saved you from being squished and all in the course of one morning. Does this make us quits?

I once locked myself out and was breaking a small window to get back in. Complicating the problem was that, when I stood outside ready to aim and throw, the cats were indoors in the line of fire, looking back at me. It worked out in the end but, goodness, they weren't much help!

You know, that makes for a wonderful metaphor (even if Marlowe would not necessarily agree). The cat could be anything, and the person in the zone could be doing anything. 'Mind what you' do and 'the end does not justify the means' and 'collateral damage is to someone else like your friends are to you' or something like that.
