 Record temperatures were recorded in Wales and the English record was missed by a whisker, but today will be hotter, they say- and from the way it feels right now I don't suppose they're wrong.

I suspect that if a record isn't actually broken they'll make one up.

I suppose these record temps must be recorded in the shade because all the instruments we have say it gets very much hotter in the sun.

I think the official temperatures are recorded in the shade and 5 feet off the ground. Down at pavement level in the baking heat or on a beach or parched park it will be much much higher, hence why dogs should not be walked during the hot part of the day.

And so the results are not exactly arbitrary but still somewhat misleading.

Yes, they usually live in one of those white 'Stephenson' screen thingies if they are official.

Well, we are talking about Wales. We're not known for our tropical climate. Mild and wet is our default.

It definitely does. I'm finding it too hot to think, so I may more or less give up on today and spend the day reading and knitting.

Thanks. The weather suddenly turned this evening. We are sitting on the patio- baking- when there was gust of wind that blew the patio furniture about. And now it's raining.

There's been record breaker- 40.2 but on Heathrow Airport- not like it's ever hot out on the strips there or anything!

Mid afternoon in Eastbourne it was very hot indeed.
