The South Downs form our western horizon. They must be about three, four miles away. We can see the entire stretch of them from Beachy Head to Firle, with Windour Hill- where the Long Man is- somewhere in the middle.

Firle, Mount Caburn and Mount Harry
Go back as far as sums will carry...

Mount Caburn and Mount Harry- which flank the county town of Lewes- are just out of sight, but if we got in the car and drove north we'd be seeing them soon enough.

At night car lights come up over the rise of them, shine straight in at our windows, then dip down on the descent towards Eastbourne. Last week, driving over to Seaford, we found the exact spot on the road where this happens. There's a clump of trees that makes it unmistakeable...

At certain times a wet thickness descends- call it low cloud, sea mist, rain- and the Downs disappear- as they have done this morning...
