Fruit And Veg

How nice to have shops within walking distance; it's one of the things I missed when we were living on the farm.

I set off this morning with a short shopping list and visited three shops on the one parade- first an odd little shop that sells lamps, potted plants and greengrocery, then to the Co-op on the corner, and finally because neither of the other two had lettuce to the little Tesco. The lighting shop had the best cauliflowers- and I liked his bedding plants so much I bought three- even though they weren't on the list.

None of them had courgettes.

Ailz says they're blaming shortages in the fruit and vegetable line on the war in Ukraine. Like her I'm not sure I believe them. I don't think everything can be Putin's fault...

They're blaming cooking oil shortages on the same thing.

Well, if people will insist on sunflower when we produce enough rapeseed oil to be self sufficient- the local fields are now their usual blaze of yellow............

And Ukraine and Russia don't grow olives!

The real shortages will be this autumn/winter, if farmers in Ukraine have sown only a fraction of their usual crops.
