I was trying to imagine what it must be like to be a salesman- and be everybody's long lost cousin during working hours and totally enthused about a product you may not wholly believe in- and then it hit me that I didn't need to imagine it because I'd done the job myself- only the label I wore wasn't "salesman" but "priest".

Ailz was saying it would take us some weeks to fully realize we actually live in this seaside town and are not just visiting on our hols.

We drove into the hinterland yesterday and bought plants from a nursery and a garden centre. The nursery was tucked in under the Downs with a sheep farm next door (very noisy because it was feeding time) and certain aisles roped off because they had birds nesting in the merchandise. I liked its style. This was in Willingdon- which is a suburb of Eastbourne with an historic centre and a church full of monuments to the Parker family, whoever they were...

St Mary, Willingdon

A long dead Parker. The damage to his nose and hands was probably caused by the German flying bomb which also took out most of the church's stained glass.
