The Watton monument dominates the south chapel of St Margaret's church, Addington. It memorializes three generations of a squirearchical family about whom there don't seem to be any stories- at least not any to be found online.

I've featured the work of the sculptor Edward Marshall before. He's one of the great 17th century monument makers. I sort of thought this might be one of his- except that it's a little less lively, less characterful than I'd expect. On researching it afterwards I found that it's attributed (these 17th century sculptors rarely signed their work) to his son Joshua. Same workshop, different hand.

I'm making a post about it mainly because I love these little doll-like figures of William Watton the younger and Margaret his wife. I think they're charming...
