I watched a couple of hours of BBC archaeology last night. Digging for Britain with Alice Roberts is this generation's Time Team- a big difference being that Roberts gets to cherry pick her digs whereas Time Team occasionally had to wind up a programme by saying, "Well, what we've learned from this dig is that there's absolutely no archaeology on site, but we did find this clay pipe in a flowerbed." I miss Time Team- with its quirky personalities and element of suspense- and wish they'd revive the format.

Talking about the BBC, I see Nadine Dorries- on behalf of an embattled Prime Minister who is looking to divert attention away from his naughtiness- is saying the license fee that supports it will be gone by 2027. This government hates the BBC- as have successive governments- which shows it must be doing something right- though I'm not sure what because its news services bend over backwards in support of the establishment agenda. Would I miss it if it were gone? Not terribly, I'm afraid. I enjoy some of its output (Digging for Britain for example) but that's as deep as it goes. There was a time- a long time ago- when the BBC provided the spaces in which the nation did much of its self-examination and soul-searching; now it's just one of a multiplicity of media outlets.
