Christmas Eve On Firle Beacon
In one direction you look out over the Weald...

(The woman in the picture had a large floppy,woolly puppy which was fraternising with everyone on the hill- human and canine. She was shouting fot it, "Crystal, Crystal..." and it was paying not a blind bit of notice- and I was thinking "Crystal" was a silly name for an overactive hearthrug. A middle-aged man it was bothering asked me- aggressively- if it was mine- and even though I disowned it- let me know that if it jumped up at him one more time he'd kick it. And I thought, "And a Merry Christmas to you too, mate!")
