Unexpected

We ate our lunch on a park bench by the village pond in Writtle- a remarkably pretty village outside Chelmsford. There were ducks, a pair of Canada geese- so far exactly what you'd expect- and a freshwater Terrapin- a species decidedly not native to the British Isles.

They come over here, colonize our duck ponds, eat our bugs...

It lay basking in the sun at the edge of the pond, then slipped into the water, swam a few strokes, climbed out again and chillaxed some more. If it were my terrapin I would call it "Cameron"

They were native at one time.

The one in the pool at Apley here is a red neck.
