A year ago coronavirus was in the offing. If I'm reading my records correctly the airports had already closed. Masks were not yet being worn- and it would be months before their use became widespread. It was still possible to visit shops, restaurants, pubs and other public venues. On March 6, 2020 I posted a picture of a flooded road at Barcombe Mills in East Sussex and titled it "A souvenir of the great rains of March 2020." The following day I wrote a post wondering why we were getting so jittery about a virus that seemed little worse than the flu. A few days later we visited a National Trust property and had difficulty getting a seat in the restaurant. On March 18 we ate out for the very last time...

Here in California we started mandated mask-wearing March 16, 2020. Restaurants, bars, salons, gyms, parks, everything closed as if someone switched off a light. A strong majority of the locals (the San Francisco Bay Area) were compliant as far as I could tell. And still are. It is very rare to see someone in my neighborhood without a mask hanging around their neck if not actually on. A whole year of it and I have mask/pandemic fatigue, so getting vaccinated would ease my fear level. But we won't be able to go without masks for a long time yet.
