Hard To Explain
In the past 24 hours I've watched three films by the Wachowskis.
1. Cloud Atlas- which is just about OK
2. Jupiter Ascending- which is barely OK
3. The Matrix- which is a work of genius.
And the difference in quality between the movie that made the sisters' reputation and the ones they've turned out since is so enormous I can't account for it except by saying....
...that it's as if with the Matrix they were channeling the Spirit of the Age- and afterwards, job done, they went back to being film-makers again.

Their non-sf debut Bound (1996) is a beautiful neo-noir inversion of femme fatale tropes and I recommend it very highly.
