Merry Christmas, Ratty

Seeing as how the rats are now essentially members of the family we've bought then a Christmas present.

It won't kill them, but it'll coat the surfaces they're looking to nibble on with "a bittering agent" and- well- we'll see...

This is phase two. Phase one was motion activated lights. They pop their little whiffly faces through the holes that serve as their points of ingress and- flash- they're all lit up- and being creatures of the night- they turn tail.

There are sound based repellents on the market I believe, so they may be worth investigating.

"Seeing as how the rats are now essentially members of the family we've bought then a Christmas present." That is just so wrong. XDDDDDDD Well, at least it wasn't poison. But I do suspect that you will need poison in the end. That or a cat or a dog to hunt them, because they will just nibble through the lacquer to get to the good stuff, I predict, and they cannot be allowed in other tahini jars.

Ah. Keeps them from getting outrageously bold.
