Witches And Wizards
Jul. 13th, 2024 07:30 am The New York Times tells me that the "t" in "witch" is silent. I'm so so sure about that. When I say "which" I touch the roof of my mouth with the middle of my tongue, but when I say "witch" I use the tip. I say there's the ghost of a difference, but a difference all the same- and a really sensitive recording device would pick it up.
On the subject of magic-makers, why in fiction do witches and wizards always wear pointy hats? Some source I came across suggested that it was a far memory of the pyramidal hats worn by ancient priesthoods- through which the energies of the cosmos were funnelled down into their brains- but where in the historical record is there evidence of such a priesthood or- perhaps more to the point- evidence of witches and wizards of more recent times wearing any such thing? Did Dr Dee wear a pointy hat? Did Aleister Crowley? I used to hang out with respectable latter-day Witches- and none of us wore pointy hats- except as a joke at Halloween.....
