Our neighbours have put a life-sized statuette of an owl on the flat roof of their new extension. Damian who is still working at their property saw it earlier on the kitchen table. "It's to frighten off the pigeons," he said. "Well, I wish them luck with that," I said. "And they do know," I added, "That when the first Eastbourne wind storm comes along, we'll be finding it on our patio, in pieces." I'll glue it down for them," he said.

Ailz has tickets for the Eastbourne tennis tournament. I walked into town with her to Favolosa, the cafe where she'd arranged to meet up with Miriam. Favolosa is a favourite haunt of the travel writer Bill Bryson. Walking into it, he says, is like stepping back into 1957- and the set of a Cliff Richard musical- all mirrors and chrome and cheerfulness. Well, yes,so it is. I rather like Cliff Richard musicals- especially now that period charm has been added to their general amiability.

This is the last year the pre-Wimbledon tournament will be played out at Eastbourne. The Tennis Fed is relocating it- along with a couple of other prestigious regional tournaments- to the Queens Club in London. "Someone," says Ailz, "Is going to be making money from this."  One of these days they're going to centralise one thing too many and London is going to collapse into a black hole....
