Our neighbours have put a life-sized statuette of an owl on the flat roof of their new extension. Damian who is still working at their property saw it earlier on the kitchen table. "It's to frighten off the pigeons," he said. "Well, I wish them luck with that," I said. "And they do know," I added, "That when the first Eastbourne wind storm comes along, we'll be finding it on our patio, in pieces." I'll glue it down for them," he said.
Ailz has tickets for the Eastbourne tennis tournament. I walked into town with her to Favolosa, the cafe where she'd arranged to meet up with Miriam. Favolosa is a favourite haunt of the travel writer Bill Bryson.
