But they don't look evil.

I don't suppose the cream of Germany's fighting men got that posting. None of these blokes have what I'd call a soldierly bearing. Were it not for the forage caps, the insignia, they could be clerks, shop assistants, bus conductors....

They look sad, frightened, apprehensive. One could feel sorry for them.

In the event very few of them were hanged. Most got short prison sentences. And when they emerged they sloped back onto civvy street and became.....
