Carnival Time

 We went down to the sea front to watch the Eastbourne Carnival Parade. I had my camera with me but found I'd taken the card out to download the pix of Epigraphia and forgotten to put it back. This is so like what keeps happening in dreams....

It was Elisa's idea to go watch the parade. I'd forgotten all about it.

Where do all the Bolivians come from? there were several troupes of them in their sparkly Carnival costumes. And no mistaking their nationality because they were all displaying the national flag. There must be a colony here somewhere on the South coast. But why? Why Bolivians especially?

Afterwards we went for a drink. All the obvious places were madly busy.  But not the Bowls Club- which has a bar and welcomes non-members. This was a discovery. And in gratitude we found ourselves signing up for membership.  Are we going to take up bowling? Well, why not? It's age-appropriate....

Unserious

 The PM's promise to bring back conscription isn't serious politics. It's hardly serious electioneering either. 

Because

(A) He knows he's unlikely to be PM for very much longer and so is never going to be required to carry through on it.....

And

(B) He must also know (as anyone who thinks about it must know) that it would be ruinously expensive to implement and, more importantly, hugely unpopular with those on whom it impacted (meaning young adults of conscriptable age and their families) leading to social division, mass disobedience, demonstrations, riots.....
