Giving And Getting
Dec. 22nd, 2023 11:34 am The lady upstairs from the Meeting House (in the flat that used to be the warden's) keeps the Buddhists and Quakers downstairs supplied with leftover cake from the Muffin shop where she works and we thought it would be nice to give her a small Chistmas present to say "Thank you". She loves her plants so I bought her an Amaryllis from the stall on Terminus Rd and a bunch of us took it round to her yesterday morning after the Thursday meeting for Worship.
Reciprocity, mutuality, neighbourliness: all good things....
I love toy soldiers but I'm not as keen as I used to be on people waving guns around- so Ailz found these and bought me them as an unChristmas present. They're stretcher bearers- minus stretcher- and were made by John Tunstill Ltd in 1984 (that fated year). I don't know what nationality they are. The seller suggested Swiss- and for all I know they might be- but given the Swiss only fight wars as mercenaries I think it unlikely. Myself, I favour Belgian but they might be German or Austrian or even British. Tunstill specialised in soldiers from the mid 19th century to 1913- favouring parade uniforms over battledress.- so whoever they are, these little chaps may be marching towards the Great War but they haven't got there yet. Never such innocence again....
