My father died in his early 80s. He was beginning to fail. The last time I saw him he said, "If my condition doesn't improve, it'll be time  to take a walk in the woods." What finally did for him was a bleed on the brain; he fell, hit his head, seemed to be fine- and died in bed a week later..

My mother kept active until she was in her early 90s.  Then she had a fall, then she declined quickly, then she levelled out and the last decade was one of slow, slow attrition. She was 101 when she died....

I think I prefer the way my father went. On the other hand my mother didn't seem to suffer...
