We had arranged to meet Jenny and Ian at Southwark Cathedral. We arrived early so I went ino the building to reshoot some of the pictures that didn't come out right when we visited two years ago.

Notably these of the Trehearne monument.

John Trehearne was a royal servant, first in the household of Elizabeth I, afterwards as "gentleman portar" (sic) to James I. And that's essentially all I know about him. He was married, he had children, he was wealthy. I doubt that he was the model for the drunken porter in Shakespeare's Macbeth, though the two men were neighbours in Southwark and may well have known one another. His monument, like all those in the cathedral, is beautifully maintained. I don't know who the sculptor was.

But talk about a "speaking likeness"...

"Smile, dear, that gentleman is taking our picture..."
