The surveyor had a retractable ladder. He said he got it 20 years ago when he was a young man and a bit of a petrol head and wanted something that would fit into the tiny boot of a cockmobile. He didn't say "cockmobile" but he implied it.

Back then they were a bit niche- and only surveyors had them, but now you can buy them at DIY stores.

It was lightweight and retracted into a square object no bigger than the portrait of Lord Roberts that's hanging on the wall beside me.

I want one.

No, of course I don't. I'd never use it. I don't have a head for heights. I just thought it was neat. And I love good design.

He propped it against the front of garage so he could take a look at the side wall of the house. The side wall looked fine.

"Can I have a go," I asked. "But you're not insured," he said, and proceeded to tell me a cautionary tale about a large lady who'd followed him up to the attic of her house, lost her footing, and would have been badly damaged if he hadn't had hold of her wrists. "Still, if you're very careful..."

I only went up two or three rungs. Then the nerves kicked in.

But I can confirm it. The side wall of the house looks fine...
