So Many

I dreamed I was reviewing my shareholdings online (IRL I don't have any). I clicked on the name of a company and up popped a real time video of what was happening on its premises. "Where's that," asked one of my children. "It's the cafe in the park we sometimes walk round." I said.

There were several of my children present. One of them was a baby who was rolling about on a bench and in danger of falling off. "Remind me who that is," I said and one of my grown-up kids replied, "That's Jill". "I can keep track of my grandchildren," I remarked, "But not my children; there are just so many of them."

Elon Musk's passion for free speech doesn't extend to people who impersonate him. Twitter in his name and you're banned. My mild approval of his takeover is getting milder.

A petition arrived in my email asking Elon to ban President Khamenei of Iran. I binned it. If you believe in free speech you believe in free speech for everyone- even for bigoted autocrats who deny it to others.

I don't really care what Paul Pelosi gets up to in his spare time but the politically unimportant story about him being hit on the head with a hammer is rendered important by the utterly implausible version of events his friends are putting out- and the media's willingness to swallow it.

The Democrats will be swept away in the midterms and they'll have deserved it. Of course the Republicans won't be any better.

Russell Brand refers to the dominant (but very unpopular) ideology of the moment as "liberal authoritarianism". There was a time when I'd have called that phrase oxymoronic. Now I'm just confused...
